What can I say about tulips...? I'm not a tulip connoisseur by any means. I just like them... quite a lot actually. You won't find huge numbers of tulip oddities in my gardens and I have no exciting new info about them. It's really pretty simple actually... in many cases I simply buy what's on sale at the end of the season, try to plant them in groupings of the same color and variety, I plant them deeply so they don't wear out by multiplying as quickly. I occasionally throw a bit of fertilizer their way if I think of it, and allow the foliage to brown off after they bloom. If I decide to order tulips, I almost always go with Darwin hybrids since they perennialize well (lily flowered varieties do quite well on this count also).... in fact, I have some tulips that have been in the garden twenty-five years and divided only once in all that time. That said, I have little else to offer other than a few photos of the tulips in my gardens.
Enjoy! Larry

I love tulips and you have some beauties Larry. Our climate is too hot for them, although they can bee grown for one season.
You have some lovely Tulips. I especially like that front bed with the Hosta in it. Very nice. I don't have any left. Squirrels always dig up my small bulbs and I said heck with it and stopped planting the things they get.

I love the tulips also Larry but am not so lucky to have them come back very often. The squirrels and the rabbits seem to follow me around as I plant them, put chicken wire over them this year.

Your tulips a beautiful!! I think I made the mistake this year (my first one with tulips) of not planting them close enough to each other. I'll try to do that next year - maybe then mine will look a little more like your beautiful spreads :)
I'm with you Larry, also grow tulips just because I like them. We often are told over here just to bin the Tulips after flowering as we are told that they never do well in consecutive years. I think your suggestion of deep planting is the key to the whole thing. alistair
I'm also really digging the hosta and tulip pairing, they look great near each other. I'm wondering if the tulips will do OK under or nearly under an evergreen, time for some Internet research...
Hi Larry, I like tulips too. Your en masse plantings are absolutely stunning, and always so welcome in early spring! I haven't had good luck with them staying around after the first year or two. This fall I bought some tulips that were called perennial tulips and are supposed to be longer-lived. I hope they live up to their name!

Beth... try the Darwin Hybrids... I've had amazing luck with them! Larry
El Gaucho... I've had no problems with tulips under evergreens... in fact, I suspect they prefer to remain quite dry once their foliage dies off and that is generally the situation next to conifers.
How beautiful, Larry!! Only species tulips do well here, unless you want to do the pre-chilling of the bulbs (too much trouble for me), and even then, they won't return the following year. So I will just appreciate them from afar. You have such a gorgeous display !! Daffodils and other bulbs do well here, so I stick with what works.
